Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
Ira Green is a breast cancer survivor who was inspired to create Freedom when her three friends were diagnosed with cancer and needed to use natural products during chemotherapy. Ira’s friends were frustrated that no natural deodorants actually worked, so she left behind a 20-year career in finance and sold her company to start Freedom. A mother of three daughters, Ira is proud to run a business that empowers women and provides them with a healthy and effective deodorant they can believe in. In her free time, Ira loves watching her Seattle Seahawks.
How did they come up with the idea?
As mentioned above, Ira’s friends needed to use all-natural products during chemotherapy. They were sick of deciphering chemicals on deodorant labels and finding out every natural deodorant they tried didn’t work. So Ira started making deodorant in her own kitchen. She used ingredients she knew and trusted – we always joke Freedom uses ingredients so clean you could eat it (but please just put it on your armpits). When Ira shared her creation with her friends, they were amazed. One friend who was going through chemotherapy and early-onset menopause started crying because it worked so well. She didn’t smell. She felt like herself again. She felt confident again. Freedom was born.
