Here we sit down with Tom, to learn a bit more about his journey as a study coach.
Q. Tell us a little more about your journey as an entrepreneur – how did you get started? What inspired you?
Tom: After I graduated, I figured out that many students lack certain skills that will benefit them in their professional career, think about time management, creating overview and structure in their life, and finding a balance between sports, social, and work life.
This increases their stress levels. I figured that I developed certain skills myself throughout my time at University. I thought it was strange that we never learned those skills during our time at University, and I also figured that so many students struggle with this.
Therefore, I started having interviews with students and figured out there was a demand for help in developing these types of skills. Right now, I have reached students and young professionals from over 44+ different countries with the information that I share via social media.
Q. What’s one thing in your routine that you do consistently that has made a huge difference in your personal or business life?
Tom: Great question. I would say my daily 15-minute meditation in the morning.
This is a guided meditation from my personal mentor, and it reminds me of my mission and vision and that I should take consistent action toward reaching my goals.
Q. Who are your mentors and inspirations? And what knowledge or insight did they give to you that was valuable?
Tom: I have a couple of mentors, some of my teachers at University help me out. But the mentor who taught me a lot of business knowledge and insights is definitely Rob Dial (also known as The Mindset Mentor).
He helps me to keep a solid entrepreneurial mindset, and his team is helping me out with growing my business.
The most important lesson I have learned from him was to care less about what others will think or say and focus on your own journey.
Q. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Tom: I have a couple of moments. One of them was getting my first paid client, of course. It’s very scary in the beginning to offer a high-ticket service when you are just starting as an entrepreneur.
Besides that, I have many satisfying moments, especially when I receive personal messages from students who share their accomplishments with me and thank me for the tips and advice I gave them.
Adding value to their life is the most amazing thing I can do.
Q. How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
Tom: I mainly market my business via social media. Think about Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. So far, Instagram has been the most successful.
I have an international reach and talk with students from all over the world on a daily basis, which makes it very fascinating and keeps it interesting.
Q. What have been your biggest failures or challenges?
Tom: Of course, I am dealing with students, and for them to get 1:1 coaching can require quite a financial investment.
The biggest challenge so far is empowering the students to have an open and honest discussion with their parents and letting them share that they have a problem regarding their studies.
Usually, parents want the best for their kids, however, the students feel like they can’t ask for help. Failures don’t exist, in my opinion, only opportunities to learn 😉
Q. How did this failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
Tom: I have learned to be more critical about who I work with. The eventual goal is to help as many students worldwide but to get there, we first need to take small steps and help out students on a 1:1 basis.
From there, we can grow the business, and we can impact more lives.
Q. If someone was to create a TV show about you, what would it be about, and what would it be called?
Tom: Interesting question. It would be something regarding doing things that are uncomfortable. I have always made choices that are uncommon, I’ve always done things that other people will not.
Examples are going abroad to study when I was 18, going to a private business university, and starting my own business. Living my own life on my own terms.
