Working From Home: The New Normal

If you give people the trust and respect that they need a work-life balance, they will give you back in spades.

With the onset of one of the deadliest viruses COVID-19, there has been a huge shift in the corporate culture from working a strict 9-5 job in formals to flexible hours at the comfort of your personal space.

Global Effect of Work from Home

As per data around the globe, it has been found that some companies already intended to shift the culture to work from homes from 2023. Following is a summarized view of how it has hit people from different spheres.

Companies like Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, JP Morgan, Linklater, and global law firms like Slater and Gordon have all granted their employees the benefit of work from home. But this doesn’t mean all business districts are going to remain ghost towns.

Organizations can’t just tear up their leases, and many are wary of going completely remotely. They want to keep a space to bring teams together, if only occasionally. Innovation in the office space becomes a primary concern of the top management. How to do this safely is a critical question.

The first and the most important thing that needs to be done is to have access to fresh air and then some of the other tech innovations might include contactless facial recognition to gain access to a building; voice-activated doors, windows, and blinds; app-controlled vending machines; and smart wearables that detect signs of illness, or alert you whenever someone strays into your personal space.

For the newcomers or the ones who have recently joined the corporate world, a lot of difficulties has been felt by them in their work. As per research, their productivity has been hampered since they may not get the guidance at the time they wanted which if they had been in office, who would have got almost instantly. They felt the lack of incidental training. However on the other hand this has been an opportunity for the people who have been into their jobs for quite some time and who don’t feel the need to have on-the-job training. Their productivity has increased many folds.

For some the Work from Home policy has indeed been a blessing in disguise as they get to spend more time with their families, they are at an advantage to take better care of their parents and children and get back the charm that they have lost in their relationships. For some it is just the opposite. The people who live alone in their rented apartments have felt even lonelier amidst all these. They have nothing to look after other than the four walls they live in.

If we see the other side of the coin, the ones who live alone in their rented apartments can shift to cheaper places and save money on their rent and the commute. Many brokers have inquiries from people to rent apartments in cheaper places due to the extension of the WFH policy. The organizations can opt for a middle ground wherein employees work 2 days from the office and rest 3 days from home because all the corporate culture and the atmosphere cannot be maintained via Zoom Calls.

The WFH culture has forbidden employees to such an extent that they seem to be logged in almost all the time. Some fear losing their jobs and therefore they work day in and out to be acknowledged by their leaders and the management.
