The Rise of Hip-Hop

It’s challenging to know how to think about time precisely as the world keeps changing quickly, and a number of significant global events are taking place. The only constant thing over the past few years has been the release of high-quality music that can be used as timestamps.

Since the 1970s, we have seen many great changes in music. It was a time when people’s tastes in music were as diverse as the events of the day. Here is a brief history of the most loved genre of music – Hip Hop!

How It All Started

It all started in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City, which was the birthplace of early hip-hop music in the 1970s. It began as a cooperative effort between intersecting Black, Latinx, and Caribbean American youth groups at block parties, which were neighborhood events where DJs played soul and funk music.

In 1979, a hip-hop group Sugarhill Gang’s song – Rapper’s Delight, peaked at number 40 on the US Billboard charts, which is now regarded as the first hip-hop record and established hip-hop as a legitimate genre.

Hip-hop was in vogue in the 1980s. Numerous artists started introducing fresh concepts to the genre, such as the use of drum kits—especially the 808—more complex sampling techniques, metaphorical rap lyrics, and more extensive collaboration with other genres like electro music. It truly gained popularity in the 1980s, particularly in the United Kingdom, Japan, as well as Australia.

While since the 90s, many of the most well-known performers/musicians emerged, who experienced a kind of comeback in the mainstream music scene after their appeal had waned for about ten years. During this decade, other musicians also made their debuts and had a significant impact on the music industry.

Since its inception, Hip-hop has given rise to dozens of subgenres, including trap, grime, gangsta rap, rap rock (or nu metal), crunk, chillhop, bounce, mumble rap, Latin hip-hop, and conscious hip-hop.
