LOLI Beauty: Sustainable, Zero-Waste Beauty Brand

What problem does the LOLI Beauty solve?

Did you know that dry skin can pose real health issues? It’s generally accepted that overly dry skin can lead to visible wrinkles or creepiness (otherwise known as alligator skin), but beyond making the skin look or feel rough, itchy, or look flakey, skin dryness is a real medical condition called “xerosis”. Many lifestyles, environmental, or health factors contribute to overly dry skin like sun damage, extremely cold weather, and even over-bathing with harsh soaps.

Why is petroleum jelly bad for dry skin?

The widely accepted treatment suggested by dermatologists to help alleviate the signs of skin dryness is a well-known balm made from a by-product of the oil industry! From treating post-surgery wounds to scars or stretch marks, this petroleum-based jelly is considered the go-to moisturizer that is generously slathered on skin, lips, and body.

This just doesn’t make sense. Why risk using a petroleum-based product that potentially contains dangerous contaminants? At LOLI Beauty, we made it our mission to develop a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to petroleum jelly to moisturize and hydrate from head to toe. Even better, we felt it was important to develop a balm free from beeswax as a vegan alternative – we use sunflower seed wax in our Date Nut Brûlée.

Whether you are experiencing signs of dryness like slight to severe flaking, roughness, itchiness, or fine lines and cracks, this natural, smoothing moisturizer is an independently MADE SAFE® certified alternative. We only use organic, food-grade ingredients, so it’s good enough to use on the whole family including your pets. True to our zero waste beauty mission, we also upcycle the oil from the kernel of the date-nut, also known as the Dattier du Desert, otherwise known as the Date Palm Tree. Rich in vitamins, minerals, tocopherols, phytosterols, and omega fatty acids like oleic acid, it’s a sustainable alternative to coconut oil or shea butter.

Our Date Nut Brûlée is a miracle nourishing balm for the face, lips + body. The ultimate multitasker, it’s vegan, water-free, cruelty-free, and made from our signature date nut seed oil sourced from seven Fair Trade co-ops in Senegal. Developed with a limited number of natural ingredients, it also contains tamanu and avocado oils to smooth and soothe irritated, sensitive complexions like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. Since we believe at LOLI Beauty that you need less to do more, it even doubles as a solid oil cleanser, a waterproof makeup remover, and a pre-shampoo scalp treatment.

Tell us about the founder. What is their background?

Known as “the beauty medium”, Tina Hedges blends her skills as a seasoned beauty executive and award-winning product innovator with her passion for botanical alchemy to build successful beauty & wellness brands. From a young age, Tina was inspired by the power of pure, natural ingredients like sustainably sourced superfoods. Growing up in Jamaica and a descendent of Cuban heritage, Tina learned how to use botanical remedies harvested from the Caribbean Sea and the Blue Mountains to help restore balance to both the body and the soul.

Then Tina joined the dirty business of beauty -spending many years at multinational beauty companies like Estee Lauder & L’Oreal learning the science behind hair, skin, and body products. Her first foray into the start-up world was in 2005 when she launched a breakthrough, vegan, and sulfate-free hair care brand that was also featured on Bravo TV’s reality show, Blowout.

As a latine, female founder over the age of 50, Tina also turned the functional beverage sector on its head with the creation of a new category called “hangover prevention”. The brand, Mercy, made Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 100 Most Brilliant Companies list. Her most recent launch, LOLI Beauty (www.lolibeauty.com), is the world’s first zero-waste, superfood skincare brand. IAB has named LOLI two years in a row, one of the 250 disruptive DTC brands to watch.

LOLI’s transformative approach to stirring up a clean, conscious change in beauty has resulted in LOLI (which stands for Living Organic Loving Ingredients) winning the CEW Beauty Award for Sustainability Excellence, a Shorty Social Good Award, a Byrdie Eco-conscious Award, and a place as a member of the Tory Burch Fellowship Class of 2020/21, Grand Central Tech’s Accelerator Class of 2017/18 and Project Entrepreneur 2017.

How did they come up with the idea?

After almost two decades in beauty, Tina suddenly started experiencing the onset of a multitude of health concerns -from endocrine issues to allergies. Tina worked with both western doctors and traditional health practitioners to no avail. So, Tina decided to “Marie Kondo” her beauty cabinet to eliminate the toxins, synthetics, and carcinogens in her personal care routine. That’s when Tina had her first “aha moment”. She realized that she had a waste paper basket full of empty single-use plastic jars and tubes, filled with 90% water and nasties. One of the dirty secrets of big beauty is that the vast majority of skin, hair, body, and even makeup products are made of mostly water (look for “aqua” on the ingredient list). None of this made any sense, given that the world is running out of water, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and women are exposed to hundreds of chemicals from their beauty routines on a daily basis.

So Tina decided it was her life’s mission to clean up the beauty and make a conscious change. And that was how LOLI Beauty came to be.

How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?

The impact that LOLI Beauty is making is enormous. LOLI – which stands for Living Organic Loving Ingredients – is the world’s first zero-waste, organic, and MADE SAFE® certified skincare brand. LOLI Beauty’s multitasking products are upcycled from the organic food supply, waterless, vegan, non-GMO, and cruelty-free. Going a step further, LOLI mindfully packages using recycled, recyclable, reusable, and garden compostable packaging. For its partnership with ULTA, LOLI Beauty even freshly grows mushrooms for its outer packaging that’s 100% garden compostable. On its own website, LOLI offers carbon-free shipping and is plastic negative, cleaning up to 2 LB’s of plastic in the universe with every order.
