Today, we sit down with Jess to learn a bit more about his journey as an entrepreneur.

Q. Tell us a little more about your journey as an entrepreneur – how did you get started? What inspired you?

Jess: I started selling when I was about eight years old, helping the pastor’s wife sell Avon to the grandmas at church. I thought it was pretty cool how I would smile and they’d hand me money. Later on, I got more into selling. I’ve always been entrepreneurial and I’ve always had a side hustle going on.

Later on, I helped run an education department while at 3M where they taught classes on polymeric, nanofibers, adhesives, business acumen, and marketing. I didn’t teach the classes, but I helped facilitate them, and my passion for marketing and business grew when I was exposed to experts in the area.

My experinece at 3M was fantastic, which led me to buy an online company called Marketing and Network University that facilitated online courses focused on sales, marketing, and business. The company grew into a business and it helped me realize people still couldn’t figure things out even after the classes; they needed more help, so I launched my agency. From there, I started writing and specializing in LinkedIn and PR.

Q. What are your long-term goals in business? Paint a vision for the future

Jess: When I was younger, I wanted all the flashy cars and things. Now that I’m older and I have kids, I just want to be able to spend more time with them and travel. Building my business will allow me to delegate work more and more to the point where I can step away to be with my family and travel. My long-term goal is to build a strong business in the range of 50 to 100 million dollars that can function well even while I’m not there and eventually retire, and pass the business on to the kids.

Q. What motivates you?

Jess: Definitely my family. My four kids (I have three girls and one boy) are my biggest motivator because I want to spend even more time with them and have fun together. I also want to be able to provide them with better opportunities, be able to pay for my daughters’ weddings in the future and make sure they’re provided for. That helps me get out of bed and keep going every day.

Q. What business-related book has inspired you the most, or, what is your favourite book?

Jess: There are a lot of books that I really like. There’s one called The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield and it’s a powerful book about staying focused, moving forward, and getting things done. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kisoyaki have also impacted my mindset and helped me keep pushing forward on my entrepreneurial journey.

Q. What strategies do you use to optimize your performance or mindset?

Jess: I find that if I get an opportunity to exercise during the day, it helps me recharge. I usually take the kids for a walk around the block and get some fresh air, which is much needed. I work hard, so I have to play hard or rest hard to keep my balance. I take inspiration from Ryan Penita; he likes to rest, but when he’s in the office, he’s completely focused and driven during the 9 hours he spends there.

Q. If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?

Jess: Just get it done. I just know there are a lot of obstacles and junk that get in your way when you’re trying to push through things and succeed. Sometimes it seems like every time you take two steps forward, something hits you back a step, so you just gotta keep pushing, be consistent, and work hard to overcome the obstacles that are in front of you.

Q. What is one of the best or most worthwhile investments you’ve ever made?

Jess: Hiring a coach. For me, that’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made. A lot of times when you’re working, you can’t see what’s stopping you from getting to the next level. A coach provides a different point of view to help you tweak things and gives you the tools you need to move forward much faster.

Q. What is your ‘one-sentence’ piece of advice you’d like to give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur, coach, or business owner?

Jess: Stay focused, and keep working consistently. Over time, with gradual improvements, you can achieve your goals.
