How Dr Kassi Klein is tackling the stigma of men’s mental health

Dr Kassi Klein is a medical doctor, lifestyle medicine physician, yoga instructor and meditation teacher, specializing in mental health. However she dedicates her profession to a severely under-supported corner of the current mental health crisis. Dr Klein offers support specifically to men struggling with mental health issues, in an attempt to destigmatize the idea of men talking about their feelings and issues.

Through her initiative BLOKES IN MIND, she helps men improve and optimize their mental wellbeing. The outdated stereotype that men should be tight-lipped about their feelings and refrain from talking about their mental wellbeing is something that has had fatal consequences. In 2018, the suicide rate among men in the United States was 3.7 times higher (22.8 per 100,000) than among females (6.2 per 100,000).

Dr Klein aims to address men’s mental wellbeing by using an approach that delivers accurate knowledge and support in a more dynamic and practical way, in a language that she says “really speaks to men”. She believes that it shouldn’t take “hitting rock-bottom” before action is finally taken.

She says “Being a man in this modern world is tough. It’s easier to make a change to your life and address your mental health with real people on your side, and the right knowledge and tools to get you there.”

She highlights that one particularly challenging experience for a man is going through a breakup. She emphasizes that despite the fact it is a common occurrence, it’s a space where men don’t know where to turn for support. She offers 1-on-1 coaching for this and aims to improve the conversation about something that is a hugely underrepresented aspect of men’s mental health and wellbeing.

“Whether it’s a broken heart, the modern struggle, or even just the day-to-day grind, I want to help,” she says.

By using her medical background she applies approaches backed by science, psychology and cutting-edge research to help men be equipped with the strength, knowledge and sensitive understanding that they are often lacking.

Mental struggle isn’t something that anyone has to go through alone. “BLOKES IN MIND is the tribe that will help you build your mental muscle.”
