Alison Martin on Learning to Lead Through Mentoring Exclusive Interview

Why is this subject, “Learning to Lead Through Mentoring,” important in the world?

Mentoring relationships are important at all stages of a career, and access to relationships is a critical talent strategy for employers to attract, retain, and develop talent.

What is the pressing issue right and how are you addressing it?

We are working to build more effective leaders by teaching them to engage and how to pour into others in addition to connecting them with other executive leaders, recognizing that the higher you go, the more critical mentoring becomes and the harder it is to access. We are also building more engaged and productive workplaces by harnessing the power of learning through mentorship.

Alison Martin Biography

What is your background in this subject?

I wrote my book, “Learning to Lead Through Mentoring,” based on personal experiences of building a career through the intentionality of cultivating impactful mentoring relationships.

I am a mentoring expert and have built a company that created a proprietary tech-enabled mentoring and leadership development company for people leaders and high potential individual contributors at companies of all sizes.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I’ve been an open book (literally) about many of the early challenges I experienced in my background, but something most people don’t know about me is that I am an extroverted introvert.  It took me a long time to realize I need time in solitude to recharge despite appearing very social to most people.

What are your passions outside of your career?

Travel is my top passion. I inherited my love of travel from my Aunt, who has been to more than 100 countries to date. Each year, I try to go to at least two places I have never been and really try to immerse myself in the culture.

Are there any social causes that you believe in and support?

I support many women-focused causes. I serve on the board of an organization called Purposeful Living Inc., which provides coaching and support to women who are struggling and in search of community. I am passionate about women’s health equity and domestic violence prevention as well.

What is next for you?

We are launching a mentoring and leadership program geared towards women in 2024. This program is unique and so needed and will undoubtedly be super impactful. I am personally very excited about it.
