We live in a fast-paced world and a world obsessed with the pursuit of productivity, often at the expense of self-care. However, Dr. Lakshinie Gunasiri, through her profound insights and personal journey, is showing people, especially women, a path where productivity and self-care coexist harmoniously.

Today, we will explore her 5 tips to achieve productivity without sacrificing self-care based on her invaluable experiences as a pediatrician, life coach, wife, mother, and entrepreneur.

5 Effective Tips to Achieve Productivity Without Sacrificing Self-care

  1. Be clear on what you want.

The first thing Dr. Gunasiri recommends is being clear on what you want because it will help you prioritize what you do. This may involve or can be expanded to knowing what you want in your day, your week, your next months, your year, or even the next 5-10 years. The biggest questions you need to ask yourself when you think about productivity are what you are trying to achieve and in what time frame you will achieve that. “Simply, if you don’t know where you are going, you will not be taking any steps towards it. So, be clear about what you want from your life or what kind of life you want to create,” says Dr. Gunasiri.

  1. Understand why you feel overwhelmed. Overwhelm can kill time.

According to Dr. Gunasiri, one of the biggest time wasters of all time is overwhelm. “How to get rid of the overwhelm is a question I’m being asked repeatedly and regularly,” she says. Overwhelm can creep into your head for many different reasons, but the two main reasons why people feel overwhelmed are fear of the unknown and not being clear on what they want to do.

  1. Set goals that are aligned with your deepest desires.

“You only get one life in this lifetime, and it is best spent how you like it to be. You cannot be someone else,” asserts Dr. Gunasiri. She believes that the more you allow your desires to manifest in the physical world through what you do daily, the more likely you will live an exciting life. That way, your soul will be on your side, and there will be no internal conflicts. “There is no self-sabotage or overwhelming mental exhaustion when there are no internal conflicts. You are more productive the way your life is meant to be,” she concludes.

  1. Understand that productivity is not goal achieving.

Dr. Gunasiri believes that productivity is not achieving every goal you set 100% of the time. “There will be times when it looks like you are not achieving anything, but the question to ask when you feel that way is ‘Am I learning and moving forward?’” she says. There will be unforeseen circumstances, as no one can predict anything 100%. Productivity is a way of achieving your goal, you may not get all the steps precisely in the way you desire to reach your goal. Some detours can give you valuable lessons you can repeat and have in your life’s tool kit, so learn to embrace that.

  1. Productivity doesn’t mean achieving a goal no matter what!

“People are productive when they have achieved their goal, but if your goal requires so much effort that you sacrifice your health and well-being and the well-being of others around you, that is self-destruction, the opposite of productivity,” says Dr. Gunasiri. It’s important to remember that you are one unique individual, but you are constantly connected to the others around you. You need to ask yourself if what you are doing will benefit the greater good in any way, if not right now, at least in the future. If it doesn’t, you have to find a different approach.
